Magic Leap 2 is a standalone spatial computer (along with available products and accessories) that enables a user to build and run immersive AR experiences. Magic Leap 2 devices may include certain technical features that enable you (or the enterprise managing the devices) to collect data from such Magic Leap 2 devices. You, or the managing enterprise, may elect to share certain data with Magic Leap for limited purposes (like to check for software updates, receive customer support services, or monitor license key compliance), however, Magic Leap 2 devices are not designed to offer a consumer-focused ecosystem like Magic Leap 1.
Magic Leap 2 Sensors
Overview: Magic Leap 2 devices use a variety of sensors:
- World Sensing Cameras: Outward-facing cameras on Magic Leap 2 devices collect wide view images of your surroundings in grayscale, which can be used, for example, to help determine the position of your head and refine the spatial scans of your environment, as well as identify hand gestures to be used for input and content manipulation. Note that World Sensing Cameras were previously referred to as “Peripheral Cameras” for the Magic Leap 1 device.
- Ambient Light Sensors: Ambient light sensors measure the light intensity around you, which can be used, for example, to auto-adjust display brightness and dimming.
- Depth Sensors: Depth sensors collect depth images of your surroundings, which can be used, for example, to build spatial scans of your environment (by identifying the relative distance of nearby objects).
- Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) Sensors: IMU sensors in your Magic Leap 2 Headset, Compute Pack, and Controller measure the relative position, orientation, and motion of these devices over time. Note that IMU Sensors were previously referred to as “Motion Sensors” for the Magic Leap 1 device.
- Eye Tracking Cameras: Magic Leap 2 devices also have inward-facing cameras, which can be used, for example, to figure out where you are looking. Note that Eye Tracking Cameras were previously referred to as “Eye Cameras” for the Magic Leap 1 device.
- Microphones: Microphones on Magic Leap 2 devices capture audio of your voice during video recordings, calls, meetings, and when you use Voice Commands. The microphones also collect acoustic sound from the world around you, which can be used to create realistic digital sound effects.
- Picture Camera:Magic Leap 2 devices also have a picture (or “RGB”) camera that you can use to take pictures or videos of the world around you.
- Altimeters: Barometric pressure sensors collect air pressure readings of your surroundings, which can be used, for example, to determine changes in your altitude above ground and improve audio playback quality.
Processing of Sensor Data: If you use a Magic Leap 2 device managed by an enterprise, such enterprise (or the app provider of an application installed on your device) may have access to, may elect to collect and/or store, and may decide to share with third parties and/or with Magic Leap, any or all of the Magic Leap 2 sensor data outlined above, or other on-device output derived from such data.
Magic Leap does not automatically collect any such Magic Leap 2 sensor data directly from Magic Leap 2 devices. Unless your enterprise chooses to collect or otherwise process such sensor data, it is designed to be processed on your Magic Leap 2 device and is not processed by, transferred through, or stored on Magic Leap's servers for any period of time. Magic Leap recommends that you review the managing enterprise's privacy policy as well as each app provider's privacy policy to understand what data is collected, used, and disclosed to third parties. Magic Leap does not control how a third party app uses, stores, or shares your data.
Privacy Status Indicator: The Magic Leap 2 headset has external and internal-facing privacy status indicators. The external-facing indicator light provides certain information that helps to alert others about when certain Magic Leap 2 device sensors are capturing information. The internal-facing privacy indicators provide UI for when an application is using the picture camera, microphone, or is streaming content to an external source. Additional information regarding the lights on your Magic Leap 2 device may be found here. Certain device sensors, such as the World Sensing Cameras and Depth Sensors, are required for basic device functionality (e.g., to display augmented reality in your environment) or may be controlled by your managing enterprise (or app provider), and may not present a privacy status indicator when in use.
Magic Leap 2 Features
Magic Leap 2 devices have several features that offer you choices around whether or how you use them. For example:
Spatial Mapping: Spatial maps, known as Spaces, are a critical part of the Magic Leap ecosystem and help Magic Leap's platform enable interactions between digital content and your actual physical surroundings. Magic Leap 2 devices create Spaces in a different manner than prior generations of Magic Leap products. Learn more about Spaces and your options for storing your Spaces for Magic Leap 2 devices here.
Voice Commands: Magic Leap 2 devices offer Voice Commands, a speech-driven input methodology for performing certain system and in-app actions on your Magic Leap 2 device in place of using your Controller, such as changing the volume of audio, exiting an application, or taking a camera capture. Processing to enable Voice Commands is done locally on your Magic Leap 2 device. Voice Command data is not designed to be exposed to apps. Disabling Voice Commands in your Magic Leap 2 device settings will only affect your use of System Voice Commands.
- System Voice Commands: If you enable Voice Commands for system functionality, your Magic Leap 2 device's near-field microphone will be available to the system locally to wait for the wake phrase (“Hey Magic Leap”). Once the system recognizes “Hey Magic Leap”, a voice clip (typically five-to-ten seconds in duration) will be recorded locally and analyzed by on-device software. Note that words and phrases similar to “Hey Magic Leap” may inadvertently activate System Voice Commands. System Voice Commands are built with a preloaded library on your Magic Leap 2 device, so your Magic Leap 2 device should not recognize or respond to any audio or instructions other than the available System Voice Commands or In-App Voice Commands (if you've chosen to install an application that utilizes In-App Voice Commands).
- In-App Voice Commands: If you enable Voice Commands for in-app functionality, your Magic Leap 2 device's near-field microphone will be available to the application locally to wait for custom in-app voice commands. Applications are not required to configure a wake phrase for In-App Voice Commands and may not present a privacy indicator during use of In-App Voice Commands. Once the application recognizes a custom in-app voice command, a voice clip (typically five-to-ten seconds in duration) will be recorded locally and analyzed by on-device software. Note that words and phrases similar to the precise custom in-app voice command may inadvertently activate In-App Voice Commands. In-App Voice Commands are built with an installed application's preloaded voice commands library, so your Magic Leap 2 device should not recognize or respond to any audio or instructions other than the available In-App Voice Commands or System Voice Commands (if the system recognizes the wake phrase “Hey Magic Leap”). Although Magic Leap may provide tools and/or services to developers which assist in the creation of an application's voice commands library, Magic Leap does not review the content of said library (i.e., the words or phrases). Magic Leap recommends that you review the app provider's license agreement, notices, privacy policy or other documentation to understand what words or phrases may be included in its application's preloaded library and to understand how your data is collected, used, and disclosed by the provider of that app.
Hand Tracking/Gestures: When you enable Hand Tracking, your Magic Leap 2 device uses a world sensing camera to identify and forecast the location of key points on your hands in three dimensions, such as your joints and finger tips. Processing of world sensing camera information to enable this feature is designed to take place locally on your Magic Leap 2 device. Magic Leap will not receive any images or data derived therefrom that can be used to identify an individual. Please note that even with this setting disabled, apps may still have access to hand tracking information while you are using them. Hand tracking enables gesture-based input, allowing you to select system actions or manipulate content with your hands, like launching an app without using your Controller. Magic Leap recommends that you review the managing enterprise's privacy policy as well as each app provider's privacy policy to understand what data is collected, used, and disclosed to third parties. This setting is limited to use of gesture information for system functions only.
Iris ID: Iris ID is an optional feature, available on certain Magic Leap 2 devices, that allows you to unlock your Magic Leap 2 device quickly and handsfree (i.e., without your Controller) through software designed to enable iris recognition. When you set up Iris ID on your Magic Leap 2 device, an algorithm will create a template from your iris that is designed to be unique to you. To create your template, the eye tracking cameras capture images of your eyes. These images are then processed locally on-device and run through proprietary algorithms to generate a template (i.e., binary data strings). Iris ID is designed to store your template encrypted in a restricted area of your Magic Leap 2 device. Every time you use Iris ID, this template creation process is repeated and if the template is deemed to match the one generated at enrollment, your Magic Leap 2 device will be unlocked. Iris ID is designed for use only with the Magic Leap 2 – it is not designed to enable anybody to authenticate or identify you anywhere else.
Unlike your PIN, Iris ID enrollment is not mandatory. If you enable Iris ID, you will still be required to set up a PIN for your Magic Leap 2 device and you will be required to enter your PIN at least once before you can use Iris ID to unlock your Magic Leap 2 device. Should you choose to no longer use Iris ID, you can change your settings at any time. You will need to authenticate with your PIN to make this change. When you disable Iris ID, the template stored on your Magic Leap 2 device will be deleted.
Iris ID requires a license to the Developer Pro Edition or Enterprise Edition.
Eye Tracking: Eye tracking is an emerging technology used on Magic Leap 2 devices as a type of user input to figure out where you are looking while wearing a Magic Leap 2 device, to accurately render augmented reality (AR) experiences and to make those AR experiences more comfortable. Without eye tracking, your Magic Leap 2 device would be less immersive, less comfortable, and, in some cases, unable to function at all. For more information about eye tracking, visit our Magic Leap 2 Eye Tracking Data Transparency Policy.
